Pop-up or fold-out tent trailers light enough to tow behind a motorcycle, Mini Cooper, or Smart Car offer much more than just canvas and gear storage. Light and sweet!

Many camper trailers are small enough to be towed by subcompact cars such as the Smart Car and the Mini, and by larger motorcycles.

Many of these are pop-up campers (but best described as "fold-out" or "flip top" campers) where the top opens up and flips over to become the bed platform and/or floor of the dressing room or annexe. Such fold-outs generally sleep two, and provide gear storage under the bed. The larger ones have sufficient living area for one or two camp chairs and a small table.

An "integrated" camper is one which has the poles and tent permanently attached to the frame or body of the camper so that the tent is raised automatically as the roof unfolds. In a non-integrated unit, the tent and poles must be set up and taken down by the user.

Specifications are taken from the manufacturer web sites or calculated from floor plans.

Options and Extras

Most of these little flip-top trailers come with optional awnings or extensions to add to the living space. Optional kitchens, water tanks, and other conveniences are common.

The trend towards ultralight campers – caravans as they are called outside North America – appears to be a strong market force. Eight of the top fifteen most popular articles at Suite101.com RV Recreation are about ultralight trailers.

Few campers are as light and easy to tow as these fold-out motorcycle campers.

This is good but I have found a few others that have peeked my intrests like the Roll a Home , Trailmaster's Aspen series Ambassador and Classic and Sentry.I almost bought a Time Out but the storage is an issue as are the 8 inch tires I like the storage in the Roll a Home and the Aspen Classic also the 12 inch tires . I know time out has storage but its all on the bed and in the way where the other two are under the bed with access any time cost are close for all

I have a Livin Lite camper made by QuickSilver; it is a 6.1 and weighs about 600 pounds. Is this too much for me to pull behind my 1800 Honda Gold Wing Trike

Answer:
The Livin Lite 6.0/6.1 is the lightest trailer in the line. According to the Quicksilver web site, "The QUICKSILVER 6.0 was designed in response to the demand for an even lighter, more easily towed tent camper that can be towed by...larger motorcycles!"

While I couldn't find tow capacity specs for the GW 1800, I found this comment on the RSWarriors forum: "There are several fold down campers that the Wingers tow that are around 600 lbs when full of gear.... I am constantly amazed about how much "stuff' is pulled behind a Wing. 22 cubic ft. trailers are common."

That QS 6.1 is about 50-60 cu. ft. with a curb weight of 620 lbs. With a load could easily go to 1100 lbs. Is that too much for the GW? Maybe other Wingers could comment, please.

I think you missed a very important US manufacturer that makes a Compact Tent Topped Camping Trailer in Oregon. Compact Camping Concepts began with selling a manual and has evolved to designing and manufacturing the only folding platform (and DIY) tent in the USA. Their Explorer Box is popular, a DIY or ready made product and their accessories and trailer parts are fantastic!
